New Passport Requirement (to Enter/Re-enter the United States)
The temporary passport requirement policy noted below ONLY applies for travelers who wish to enter or re-enter the U.S. Travelers should check the ENTRY requirements for Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean, or the country they are visiting before travel commences to ensure they have the proper documents as entry requirements for those countries remain in effect.
As part of U.S. Department of State's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, all travelers (including newborns and infants) will be required to present a valid passport or other accepted document(s) to enter or re-enter the U.S. (visitors and U.S. residents) as early as January 23, 2007, from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
* January 23, 2007*** (see update below): All persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document (MMDs).
o ***Update: On June 8, 2007, the U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security announced that U.S. citizens who have applied for but not yet received their passports can re-enter the United States (through September 30, 2007) by showing the following:
+ A government issued photo ID
+ Department of State official proof of application for a passport
This applies to air travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
* January 1, 2008: All persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security

Note: This does not affect travel between the U.S. and its territories. U.S. citizens traveling between the U.S. and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa will continue to be able to use established forms of ID.
